The following discourse has been translated into English from Bhagavan's Telugu speech as heard on this festival's ashram audiocassette. It is a complete, literal translation made with the objective of preserving Bhagavan's precious original poetic style as much as possible.

Discourse By Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Maha sivarathri  2002 (2)

Evening, 12th March

  (Swami sings a Sanskrit poem:)

The whole Universe is under the control of Truth.

Truth is in the control of a noble person.

A noble person is the Supreme God.

The whole Universe is under the control of the Divine.

The Divine is under the control of Truth.

Truth is in the control of a noble person.

A noble person is the Supreme God.

A noble person is the Supreme God.

  Embodiments of Love!

  (Swami sings:)

The whole Universe is under the control of the Divine.

This whole world is under the control of God.

The Divine is under the control of Truth.

This Divinity is under the control of Truth.

That Truth is in the control of a noble person.

Such a Truth is under the control of noble people.

A noble person is the Supreme God.

Such a noble person is the embodiment of God.

Worship of Forms

  Embodiments of Love!

When people did not have full knowledge about God, they inquired about Him in numerous ways. However, unable to decide who God was, they took Prakrithi (Nature) as a basis.

Time passed. Taking Nature as a basis lessened, and Bharatiyas began to increase worship of murthis (any material form or idol of God). Murthi means - every single life form that is born is a murthi. All life forms that take birth are embodiments of a murthi.

What is wrong with worshipping the mother, worshipping the father, worshipping the teachers and respecting elders? They are embodiments of murthi. Such murthis have Chaitanya (Divine Consciousness) and they practice good qualities like compassion, love, mercy, patience and sympathy. No one can deny this.

There are some mere forms of stone. They are inert forms without Chaitanya, without patience, without love and without joy in them. They are immobile in that way. Many people despise the worship of such forms. However, even to hate this is a type of ignorance.

This is a flower. This finger shows (points to) this flower: “This is a flower.” This finger shows this tumbler: “This is a tumbler.” The finger shows it. After seeing the flower, our sight goes only toward the flower; it will not go toward the finger. In that same way, all of these idols are like our finger pointing. They point toward God. After seeing God, we don't need these idols. These idols demonstrate the existence of God. Isn't it wrong to criticize such forms?

We are worshipping a few things with affection. We take the pictures of our grandfathers and great grandfathers. We keep them in our house and we continue to worship them. However, is there any consciousness in those pictures? Is there compassion? Is there love? No. Then what is the inner meaning of worshipping them? Our elders demonstrated such an ideal to us. Therefore, there are numerous pictures in our house. There are elders who keep these pictures, and thus demonstrate, spread and show an ideal to us in all ways. Therefore, due to their ideals, we keep these pictures and, even though they don't have any consciousness, we keep worshipping them.

There is a 100-rupee note that is six inches long and four inches wide. However, is there consciousness in that? Is there love in it? However, even though there is no love, why does every human being love it? In the world, one who hates a 100-rupee note cannot be seen. Whether people of any country, people of any place, or people of any time, they all desire this money; people do not hate it. Aren't there so many who will even give up their life for money? Aren't there so many people who sacrifice their lives for money? What is the consciousness in this money? What is its greatness? Its greatness is the stamp of the government. Due to that stamp being there, numerous people love and experience it in numerous ways.

We see the national flag. This national flag is just woven cloth. However, the nature of sugarcane waste and the nature of a blade of grass are present in this cloth (as weaving and/or dye materials). The stamp of the grass blade is on this 100-rupee note also. The stamp of the sugarcane waste is on this. Yet there is no value at all for this. But every Bharatiya, and the people of every country, have respect and worship such a flag (each one's own national flag). Why should this be worshipped? Isn't it foolish for foolish people to worship the flag, the same ones who argue that to worship an idol is foolish? It is foolishness, isn't it, for us to struggle and undertake so much sacrifice for this 100-rupee note? In this way, worship and hatred continue on in human beings, based only on their likes and dislikes.

There is faith in every single man. He cannot aspire for anything at all without that faith. That faith has to be developed first and foremost in every human being.

  Isavaasyam Idam Jagat.

  God pervades this Universe.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

What does it mean? Every human being, every life form and every living being is the embodiment of God. Not only this.

  Eswara Sarva Bhutanam.

God is in all living beings.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

Such a Divinity is present in every living being as Chaitanya.

Eswara, Sankara, Sathya Sai

What does 'Eswara' (God) mean? Eswara is the embodiment of all aiswarya (wealth). He has six qualities: wealth, charity, fame (or reputation), wisdom, essence and detachment. It is said that the combination of these six qualities is the nature of Eswara. So, one of His names is “Embodiment of the Six Forms of Wealth”.

They also call Him Sankara. 'Shan' means Chidananda (bliss of Consciousness) and Atmananda (bliss of the Self). 'Kara' means 'one who bestows'. Shankara is ‘one who bestows Atmananda and Chidananda’. So, Divinity is contained in all types of forms of names. The nature of Eswara is dancing in every man also.

The essence of all Vedas gives the inner meaning of these words. The word 'Sathya' represents Rig Veda. The letter 'Sa' represents Sama Veda. The letter 'A' represents Atharvana Veda. 'Ya' represents Yajur Veda. Sathya-Sa-a-yi. (Applause) 'Sathya' = Rig Veda. Sa = Sama Veda. A = Atharvana Veda. Ya = Yajur Veda. Sathya Sai. Therefore, the essence of the Vedas is contained in every word. We inquire of the proof fully; but foolish people who don't know the meaning may create any number of wrong meanings.

The Meaning of LInga

What is the meaning of 'Linga'? It is a symbol. Why do people use this word? The form of the Linga relates to the Atma: to teach the principle of the Atma, the form of the Linga does not have any kind of face or feet. Therefore, they gave the name of 'Linga' to God in the form of that which has no beginning or end.

Eswara is said to contain all forms of wealth. Our intellect is also Eswara. Wisdom is Eswara. Health is Eswara. Wealth is Eswara. Affluence is Eswara. Hence, it is said that all of these, all forms of wealth, are Eswara. Vidya (knowledge or education) is also Eswara. So, everything in the world, even everything that we touch, is the embodiment of Eswara.

It is our heart that shows all of these. The heart has compassion. So the nature that is full of compassion is the nature of Eswara. The nature of Eswara is also the individual. We are unable to understand the correct meaning of such a Divine nature of Eswara.

In the world, there are so many different types of worship continuing on. However, all of these types of worship are only toward One Principle. Different Names are given to this Principle. Whether one says Rama, Krishna or Eswara, all are One. However, due to some people having strong faith, they consider It as Eswara. Then, due to having Rama as an important aim, others like the name of Rama. In this way, all is according to each one's own liking.

  Ramayate iti Rama.

  Rama is the One,

who captivates the hearts of one and all.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

They repeat the Name of the One who attracts them.

So-ham

So, Sivarathri: Who is Siva? Sivarathri is an auspicious night. Where did the nature of auspiciousness, which is Siva, come from? It comes from one's breath. That only is (Swami says slowly, while breathing in and then out) Sooooo-haaaaammmm, So-ham. That is the sound that comes from the Atma. A few people have called this ‘Hamsa Gayatri’. 'Ham' means 'I'. 'So' means God. Therefore, the inner meaning teaches, “I am God.” So-ham, this teaching, you repeat 21,600 times each day.

People are practicing teachings like these from ancient times in Bharath. No one should think of these Divine teachings as foolish. These teachings should not be ridiculed, saying they are foolish. This is because they show the true Form (direct one toward the formless God).

When this finger shows that this is a flower, is this finger simply foolish? If it were something foolish, would it be able to point to the flower? Therefore, that which is shown is the flower. It is the finger that shows. Likewise, God is that which is shown. The idol is that which shows. So we should not forget the idol of God at all. It should not be felt that it is an inert idol. There is Chaitanya even in inert things. We cannot see an inert thing without Chaitanya. There is Chaitanya even in every atom. There is this power of Chaitanya even in all forms.

  Anoraneeyaan Mahatormahiyaan.

God is smallest in the small,

  biggest in the big.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

There is Chaitanya in everything from the smallest to the biggest. Therefore, we should not feel that anything is inert. It may be observed in your vision to be inert. However, in the sight of the Vedas, all is Chaitanya. So, it is a big mistake to forget the power of such awareness.

Hence, all the worship that we do every day reaches God. When the omnipresent Atma is present everywhere, why can't it be seen? Butter cannot be seen in milk. However, just by desiring butter, will we obtain it? No. Ferment that milk into curds. We will get butter only when that curds is churned. So, thinking the Atma cannot be seen is a big mistake. Atma is the Chaitanya in all, in all human beings also.

Two Defects Are Following Man

So, instead of us recognizing this Truth, there are two faults that follow us. Two defects are following man. One: he is forgetting the hundreds of thousands of mistakes he makes. That is the first one. Due to that, we forget God. The second fault is: The tiniest mistakes of others are considered big. We feel that even the small mistakes of others are very big. That mistake only makes you distant from God. The hundreds of thousands of faults in oneself are hidden away. If these two mistakes are removed from our heart, we will become true embodiments of the Divine.

It is a big mistake to go searching only for the faults of others. One has to search for one's own mistakes. Even if it is small, one has to consider it big. Even when you see the faults of others, see that it is not considered at all. Such a feeling of sacrifice is essential for spiritual aspirants. Without this feeling of sacrifice, we will not obtain Yoga Tatwa (Union with God, which is the true spiritual practice).

Today in the world, no matter how much one observes, the sinners who look toward the faults of others are increasing day-by-day. The one who searches for even a tiny mistake within him cannot be seen anywhere. Therefore, everyone is succumbing to ashanti (peacelessness). Everyone is succumbing to sorrow. So, every man who desires to make sorrow distant and wants to make ashanti distant should first and foremost kill the faults in himself. The one who searches for faults in others is a big sinner. So we should never search for the faults of others. This is the true and correct meaning of the principle of Siva.

Such sacred qualities should enter into us. It is a big sin to criticize others. So we should not go in that direction at all. If at some time you would like to criticize, criticize yourself! "Fie! I have been born as a human being. Donning the nature of a human being, am I able to do the things that a human being should do? I am doing actions that are contradictory to this, aren't I?" Blame yourself. Criticize yourself. Punish yourself. This is true spiritual practice.

It is not sadhana to do japa. It is not sadhana to sit in meditation. It is a great sadhana to make the faults in us distant. Sadhana means to make our bad feelings distant and to develop good feelings. This is sadhana. That only is sa-dhana. 'Sa' represents Divinity, which is the embodiment of all dhana (wealth). What a sin it is to criticize that 'sa', which is the embodiment of all forms of wealth! When we increase that ‘sa’ or Divinity, that only is our wealth.

A few human beings get angry. Anger comes in an instant. However, who will that anger hurt? One's own anger is one's enemy. One's peace is one's protection. Therefore, each one should kill their anger. Compassion is one's relative. One's happiness is one's heaven. One's sorrow is one's hell. Such a misery is hell for us. Today men are always immersed in sorrow. What is the reason? The root cause for this is not recognizing one's own faults. First and foremost, he has to recognize his own faults. Feeling that he is great and that others are very menial, naïve and lowly, is a big mistake.

Where Is Divinity?

First and foremost, where is Divinity? It is in every human being. It is in every living being. It is in every life form. Every life from, every living being, every human being also is the embodiment of God. If it weren't like that, then why would it be said:

Easwara Sarva Bhutanam.

God is in all living beings.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

  Daivam Manusha Rupena.

God is in the form of Man.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

Therefore, God comes in the form of man. Hence, if we feel that such human beings are God, we will not criticize them at all.

God will always see the feeling but He will not see the outer actions. Man of today is developing his sight only on the outer actions. He is forgetting feelings. Feelings are dear to God. Hence, we have to change the fault in our vision to some extent.

Pashyati Iti Pashuhu.

Those with only external vision are animals.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

That which has external vision is an animal. One who sees with the inner vision is a human being. We are always seeing outer sights, outer sights, outer sights. This is not good. All the cows go running to where there is green grass. However, human beings should inquire, "Those are ripe crops. Is there someone watching it (a watchman)? If we go to browse there, will he not punish us?" So today we are forgetting about our duty. To forget our duty is a big fault in mankind.

A small example: We want to go on a plane today. We want to go on a bus. If it doesn't come on time, how much we will criticize that bus or plane! "What is this! The plane hasn't come on time! The bus didn't come on time!" Saying that, when one forgets one's duty, we criticize. In that same way, when man forgets his duty, another man accuses him. Is the second man able to recognize his duty? Is he able to foster his sacredness? Is he able to protect his Divinity? No, no! Due to this, human life has been burnt to ash.

Five Life Principles Are With You

Therefore, we should develop humanness. We should develop the human qualities. Today, without developing the human values, if one just thinks, “We are human, human, human”, what is the inner meaning of this? Hence, we should develop human qualities. That only is Sathya. That only is Dharma. That only is Prema. That only is Ananda. That is happiness in all aspects.

So you have been born as a human being. Why are you giving up Truth? Your five life-principles are with you only: Sathya, Dharma, Shanthi, Prema, Ahimsa. So, if you do not have that Truth, one life principle has died in you. If you do not have Dharma, two life principles in you have died. If you do not have Love, three life principles in you have died. In this way, we ourselves are removing the life principles in us. Humanness is that which has these qualities. Due to us killing such life principles, we ourselves are dying. No one is beating us. We are killing ourselves through killing our own qualities.

Embodiments of Love!

You have all kept the valuable thing of Love with you. If you kill that Love, you will become ones who are dead. We have to develop that Love. We have to develop that Truth. Wherever one goes, there is only untruth, untruth, untruth.

Truth is the life principle of the tongue. Dharma is the life principle of the hand. Ahimsa is the life principle of the heart. Hence, if we kill these three, we will be ones who have a dead tongue. We will be ones who have killed our hands. We will be ones without a heart. Therefore, we have to recognize that every single thing is within us, and conduct ourselves accordingly.

Truth Should Be Spoken

Sivarathri arose to teach sacred dictates like these. Siva also indicates humility. (Swami demonstrates by writing the letter 'si' and 'sa' in Telugu script in the air.) This means that 'si' does not raise up: it is observed to be humble. If a crown-like line is put on top, it becomes 'sava' (meaning, a dead body). (NOTE: the letter 'si' in Telugu has a loop going down. The letter 'sa' has a check on top, going up.) So we are taking refuge in the ego, which is a dead body; but we are not taking refuge in the Siva of humility and obedience. Today we consider:

  Sathyam Jana Virodhaya.

Asathyam Jana Ranjanam.

  People are hostile towards Truth.

Untruth is pleasing to the people.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

Today people are hostile towards speaking the truth. They are ruling today. Untruth pleases the people very much, so everyone is speaking untruth. It may be pleasing to the people, but is it pleasing to your heart? When you do not please yourself, what is the use of pleasing people? It's a big mistake. You are struggling to please the people, but you are not struggling for the satisfaction of the Atma.

Truth should be spoken in any situation. However, if sometime it would endanger a life, don't speak truth or bring untruth into that place. Keep quiet.

A Resolve

At one time, one spiritual aspirant made a resolve saying, "I have been born; I have been born as a human being. Having been born as a human being, I should speak the truth. I should not take part in injustice." He went to the forest and sat. He was repeating the name of Narayana (God). He was also repeating the five-lettered manthra, "Nama Sivaya."

However, Eswara (Siva) also made a resolve, thinking that the spiritual aspirant should be put to danger - made to speak untruth somehow or the other. Thinking that, Eswara, in the form of a hunter, came stalking after a deer. The aspirant who had the determination not to speak lies saw that the deer went into a bush in front of him and hid.

Eswara came. "Oh, one of penance! I came stalking after a deer. Have you seen it?" What should be said? He did see it. Then he thought to himself, ‘If I say that I did not see it, I would be speaking untruth. If I say I have seen it, the deer will lose its life. Harm will be done to it. I will be one who either tells a lie or does harm, isn't it? What is the use of me being born as a human being? What is the use of undertaking vows for so long? I will be one who ruins all my vows.’

He thought of Eswara inside. He said, "Oh Lord, teach me a good yukthi (stratagem)!" God is beside us, with us and in us. God will give immediately after we ask. Then, why should we have fear? (Applause)

The aspirant answered, "Dear one, what has seen cannot speak. What can speak has not seen. This is the answer I am giving. The eyes saw, but the eyes don't have a mouth to speak. The mouth is able to speak, but the mouth did not see. That which has seen is one and that which speaks is another. I cannot say more." Thus he avoided.

Then Eswara appeared. He said, "Dear son, this yukthi is yoga! It is true humanness to not do harm to others, but to help others in the best way with a feeling to protect them."  The spiritual aspirant protected the deer. He did not do harm and he did not speak untruth.

It is true! That which speaks is the mouth. But the mouth does not have eyes, isn't it so? That which has seen is the eye. But the eyes do not have a mouth, isn't it so? Therefore, thinking that to speak one thing and to do another is not right he achieved his objective.

Man of today has to achieve truth with such yukthi. We have to escape from our problems with such prayers to God. We have to develop the good feeling, the high feeling and the best feeling that helps everyone.

Develop Positive Qualities

We should not do harm to anybody. Harm will bring harm to us. If you do harm to one person today, tomorrow ten harms will happen to you. So, you will be the one who is increasing harm to yourself. Don't do harm. Don't be a traitor to anybody. Don't revile anybody in any way.

All of these blames, praises, acceptances and rejections relate only to the physical world. They are all characteristics of pravritthi (external outlook), but they are not characteristics of nivritthi (internal view). They are all negative (external) characteristics. However, you should develop positive (internal) qualities.

You have been born as a human being. Having been born as a human being, learning so much knowledge, becoming such a great man with so much intelligence, finally are these bad qualities, like reviling others, the things that you should do? What is the use of the education that you have studied?

One studies so much knowledge, gaining a lot of discrimination.

But still he does not know his Self, the dull-head!

No matter what style there is, he will not give up his low qualities.

  Studying again and again leads only to argumentation;

but he can never get full wisdom.

Studying and studying all education, why should one die?

The education that doesn’t die (that leads to Immortality) should be studied.

  (Telugu poem)

Being born as a human being, you have earned so much knowledge, higher knowledge and wisdom. It is not good for you to finally fall into ignorance like an animal.

  Paropakara Punyaya,

Papaya Parapeedanam.

One attains merit by serving others,

And commits sin by hurting them.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

In the Mahabharatha, Vyasa taught everyone with these two dictates:

Help ever, hurt never.

Truly, this is what we should learn. As far as possible, we have to see that we don't give suffering to others. If at some time you may be put to suffering, it doesn't matter. God will protect you from suffering. (Applause) But we should not give suffering to others. You don't have the authority to give suffering.

You are an ordinary human being. There is the nature of God in man. If you cover the nature of God with illusion and start to be bestial, this is harmful to you, is it not? So, act as a human being. What race are you? Ours is the human race. Correct that race into a good human race. Your race is the human race. Therefore, we have to make the proper effort to foster such a race.

Two Life Principles: Morality and Integrity

What are the life principles for this human race? There are two life principles: morality and integrity.

The jaathi (race) that has neethi (morality) is a true jaathi!

  (Telugu poem)

That only is our race. Without this morality, how can we have the name of 'human race'? Therefore, we should develop morality. Devoid of morality, whatever is done is useless. We have to live with morality. That is the true teaching of Eswara.

The most important Dharma of Bharatiyas is to convey that the nature of the Divine in all is One. The culture of Bharath is contained in this teaching. To prove the unity in diversity is the important aim of the culture of Bharath. Yet without recognizing the unity in diversity, you are dividing unity into diversity. This is not good. Don't give place for the difference of “You are different and I am different” and “yours and mine”. Hence, all are ours, ours, ours!

Who Am I?

Embodiments of Love!

Students!

First and foremost, know who you are. Who am I, I, I, I? You don't know who you are. In your society and in your village, aren't there so many who say, “I”? So, if you know “who am I”, it will be understood that “All are I.” There are so many ‘I’s in this world. Is it possible for you to know so many ‘I's? No, no! If you know yourself, you will be one who knows all the ‘I's. So, if you want to know everyone, first know yourself. After knowing that, “I am Atma”', we will know easily that all are embodiments of the Atma.

However, when some people do work in government jobs and professional positions, it will be very difficult to feel that all are equal. However, as far as possible, that duality also should be avoided to some extent. To begin to forgive them and to bring them on the right path is demonstrating the Divinity in man.

What Is Spirituality?

Truly, what is spirituality? Spirituality means to kill the animality in oneself and to transform the human nature in oneself into Divine nature. This is sacred spirituality. There is animal nature in every single human being. First and foremost, we have to kill this animality. Kill that animality. Then our human nature has to be transformed into Divine nature. This is true spirituality. Spirituality means - not just to know about the Atma. Making the animal nature in us distant and transforming oneself into the Divine nature is true spirituality.

Therefore, there are also many meanings to spirituality. The relationship between adi (first, primary source) and Atma (Self) is ‘adhyatmica’ (spirituality). The nature of Atma in everyone is spirituality. The unity of feeling that, “You and I are One” is spirituality. We have to enter into this kind of Oneness. No matter what anyone otherwise thinks, we should not pay attention.

Those Who Criticize Your Body Help You

Dharmaja sat in the grand assembly. Sishupala was speaking just as he liked. Finally he began reviling Krishna. "To give Krishna the agratambulam (the main offering)? Krishna doesn't have the authority to take the agratambulam at all!" Saying that, Sishupala abused Krishna in all ways.

Then Dharmaja felt very badly. "In such a grand assembly, he is reviling my Lord so meanly! Where is the authority for him to revile Krishna? This is only a form of personal disappointment. So, for the diseases that come from personal disappointment, the proper type of medicine should be given." Dharmaja held the Feet of Krishna. He said, "Krishna, You are smiling so much while he is reviling You in this way! You may be laughing but I am very sad."

Krishna said, "Crazy fellow, Dharmaja! Blame and praise, rejection and acceptance, all are only towards the body but not towards Me. Why should we be affected by blame and praise, rejection and acceptance? We are blaming our own bodies saying, 'What is this ruined body? So many diseases are coming!' We are reviling our own bodies. When you blame your own body, others who also blame your body will be ones who help you! They are not ones who are harming you. They are helping you!"

Then Dharmaja became very happy, "Swami, due to people who practice these types of teachings not being in the world, numerous people are succumbing to this type of ignorance."

Shut Up: The Correct Meaning of Mouna

How did Sishupala criticize Krishna?

Are You being worshipped because You stole the clothes

of the maids as they were bathing?

Being honored because of spending time playing pranks with cowherd women?

Dharmaja, stop all this narration now!

End all self-aggrandizement and shut your mouth!

                                              (Telugu poem)

He said to shut up! Krishna said that Sishupala actually said very good words. "Sishupala is one who knows everything. Though he knows everything, he is immersed in ignorance.” You know everything. If you also are immersed in ignorance, what is the use of all your education?

He said to shut up! That is the correct meaning of mouna (silence). Others should not be criticized too much. It is said:

  Mouna Kalahan Nasti.

With silence, there will be no conflict.

                  (Sanskrit sloka)

If one criticizes you, he does it. You should not criticize him. Pay obeisance to whomever has done harm to you. Don't retaliate. If that retaliation is done, you will just be doing what he has done. How great will you be then? You are thinking that what he has done is wrong. Just because you do another harm, will it be right that you did it? Don't do it, don't do it! If he does it, let him do it. Don't harm anyone. Wish for the welfare of all. For that reason, every day we are repeating:

                                                              Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu.

May all the beings in all the worlds be happy.

  (Sanskrit sloka)

All Should Be Happy

All should be happy. Only when all are happy, you will also obtain happiness. Therefore, we all desire happiness. We wish for the welfare of all. All of us desire health. We should not desire the harm of anybody.

We have no enemies at all. There are no enemies in the world at all. You may think of it as hatred but all are your friends. So feel that all are friends. Then only you will be one who offers your generous mentality, your broad heart and your sacred feelings to the world. God gave you birth for this. God gave birth to everyone, He gave birth for an inner meaning. Let Him do just as He wants. Offer your life to Him.

Lord, the heart that You have given to me, I offer it again to You.

What else can I offer to Your Feet?

  Accept my Salutations!

  (Telugu poem)

"I am offering to You the heart which You have given. I don't have any new things with me. I just have what You have given. I am giving You back that which You have given. There is a very big thing which You have given to me. That only is Love, Love, Love. I should share that Love again with others." In order to share that Love, you have to develop your Love.

Even his own wife and children will not respect the man who has hatred, jealousy and anger. So first and foremost, those bad qualities have to be made distant. If we develop Love, these bad qualities will naturally become distant.

Human Life Is So Sacred

Therefore, human life is the form that arises from Divinity. However, a few bad qualities are moving about in numerous people. As soon as man is born, he is born with a pure heart. While growing, growing, growing and growing, all of these bad qualities, like in elder brother who became a monkey, will come and enter into him. These bad qualities he himself has brought in from the outside; but they did not arise from within him. Those bad qualities will make your true self (your human nature) distant. They will ruin your humanness. So, don't ruin your human quality.

Human life is so sacred! It is so Divine. It is so auspicious. It is so delicate. Why are you spoiling such a human life? It is not good reviling others, harming others, and giving pain to others just for your own selfishness and self-interests. Be happy seeing the goodness of others. Be happy seeing the comfort of others. Then only you will get great bliss. Then you will be one who has fostered human nature.

Embodiments of Love!

Today is Sivarathri. It is the night of Sankara. It is the day of Sankara. I already said what 'Sankara' means. 'Sam' means a very Divine feeling. Chidananda (the bliss of the Absolute), Atmananda (the bliss of the true Self): one who bestows Atmananda is Sankara. Keeping a Sankara like that in our heart, we have to develop Atmananda, Brahmananda (the bliss of God), eternal bliss, supreme bliss and non-dual bliss. Then you will be one who fosters the delicate humanness completely.

Having been born a human being, you should not live as a weakling. To harm others is bestial. By harming others, you will become a beast. By harming yourself, you will become an animal. You are not an animal and you are not a beast. You are a human being. So we should never give suffering to others. Don't ever harm anyone. Then only bliss will give double bliss.

So Be It!

God is always saying, "Thathastu! Thathastu! Thathastu!" (“So be it!” or “May it be so!”) He will say, "Thathastu!" depending upon your own resolve. If you make a bad resolve, He will say "Thathastu!" then also. That consequence will come to you only. It may not be seen today. But in the future, it will give you suffering. So, I am hoping that everyone should live blissfully, without giving suffering to anyone and without us suffering.

We should also give respect to the education that we have studied. Respect should also be given to human nature. We should increase the respect for ourselves. We should respect everyone. Then only others will also respect us. Therefore, we have to give respect and we have to receive respect. If you want to obtain respect, it is not possible without you giving respect to others. Give respect and receive respect. That is true human nature. Give Love and again develop Love.

For us to develop these types of good qualities, we have to put in order all of our education. To struggle for one subject is only negative education. Wherever one goes, there is only this learning. What is this education?

One time someone said that a washerman is better than an educated person. If the washerman goes to a house, the occupant will give two dhotis, one shirt, and one banian (T-shirt) for washing. The occupant will write it (what he gave to the washerman) in a notebook. If there isn't a notebook, at least it will be noted on the wall! In the same manner, the occupants of each house will each write in so many notebooks.

But the washerman doesn't note anything in a notebook. He doesn't write on any wall. He will keep it in his mind, and will immediately give the correct items to each house. What education did he study? What knowledge did he learn? Hence, that which we should learn is not only this education. Along with this education, spiritual education also has to be studied. Education that helps others should be studied. We will become sacred through the education that helps others.

It's Not Wrong To Worship Nature

What worship did people do in the past? They only worshipped Nature. It's not wrong to worship Nature at all. Mother Earth is giving the food that is eaten, the water that is drunk, the crops that ripen and numerous kinds of food and recreation. Not only that. It is also giving all the grain that man needs. Not only that. It also gives the gold and silver that is found in coins. It also creates diamonds.

It gives birth to all of these and gives them to you. What is wrong with worshipping the Earth? What is wrong with worshipping the five life principles, which protect all life forms? So, all of the worship that was done by the ancients is sacred. We determine what is best to obtain lowly things and we are worshipping that. No, don't do it!

Prakrithi is Mother Earth. There is Bhu Matha (Mother Earth), Go Matha (Mother Cow), Veda Matha (Mother of Vedas) and one's own physical mother. The real worship should be done to these four mothers. Therefore, we have to do the right type of practices to protect and give satisfaction to such mothers.

More than anything else, the worship of God is very important. Due to the worship of God reducing in the world today, numerous forms of sorrow are increasing. Wherever one looks there is only sorrow. What is the reason? People are losing Self-confidence. After Self-confidence goes, what is the use of them living?

The thing that protects the country is the worship of God. If worship of God is continued, the whole country will be well. All the people will be happy. They will obtain happiness and peace. There will not be any shortage of food or water. We will obtain peace in all respects.

Three Types of Peace

However, we are repeating the words of peace: “Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi.” What kind of peace? Why are you saying it? We want three types of peace: physical, mental and spiritual. Peace is needed in the physical aspect. Peace is needed in the mental aspect. Peace is needed in the spiritual aspect. Only if there is peace in these three will we be proper human beings.

Peace, peace, peace, peace: Will you search for peace in the world? If you search for peace in the world, you will not find it. The world is only pieces, pieces. This peace is only within you. So foster the peace that is within yourself.

Embodiments of Love!

Today, chant well the name of the Lord all night and thus this sacred power has to be spread all over the world. That only is the right kind of sign of Divinity.

What does Eswara mean? Eswara is the One who moves about like air. In the same way that air goes about everywhere, Eswara is the One who goes about (pervades) like that. Therefore, your Love, your Namasmarana (repetition or remembrance of God's Name) should be spread very well to this entire world.

Bhagavan ended His Divine Discourse by chanting the bhajan,

“Hari Bhajana Bina Sukha Shanti Nahi…”
